Expanding globally via first-tier vendors and at home via well known local brands

Update #4: after Allwinner A31s SoC arrived with the new Onda V818mini topping Apple iPad mini ($329) at far better price ($145 in China and $170 outside) [USD 99 Allwinner, March 2, 2013] Colorful was also launching a similar product showing of its equal importance as a well recognized local brand (a lot of other Colorful related information will come later in the post), in addition to presence on European (via Germany) and Korean markets as well (not with tablets yet):

Note the “using high-quality components” approach of Colorful here and in other Colorful releated news items much below! In addition there is a strategy of pricing “between those of first-tier brand vendors and white-box players” as well. These are really showing high tablet aspirations of this brand for the global market as well , i.e. aiming at becoming a recognized Tier-2 brand worldwide as well.

Colorful unveils a 7.85-inch tablet with Chaintech [DIGITIMES, March 25, 2013]

China-based brand vendor Colorful recently unveiled a new 7.85-inch ultra-thin tablet, the Colorfly CT781 with a design similar to that of iPad mini. The device is manufactured by Taiwan-based Chaintech Technology and will be available in retail channels shortly.

Prior to the 7.85-inch model, Colorful released a 9.7-inch device using a quad-core processor priced at CNY1,099 (US$177).

The CT781 has a thickness of 6.8mm and features a display boarder with a width of 4.9mm. The machine is also equipped with the latest A31s quad-core processor from Allwinner Technology and a G+G reinforced panel from AGC Display Glass [a Japanese company].

Colorful chairman Wan Shan (transliterated from Chinese) pointed out that China’s tablet market had a scale of more than 60 million units in 2012, excluding Apple’s iPads. In 2013, the scale will have a chance to rise significantly to 90 million units with first-tier brand vendors to account for 30% and white-box players to account for the rest of the percentage, Wan said.

With a price level in between those of first-tier brand vendors and white-box players, and advantages in terms of brand recognition, retail channels and quality, Colorful expects its tablet shipments to reach 800,000 units in China in 2013.imageColorful chairman Wan Shan (left) and Chaintech chairman Lu Li-Cheng

Foreword for the later updates: … in other countries via well known local brands as well, like via Keian (恵安) in Japan (Update #1) or ARCHOS best known in the European countries (Update #3) (see below, after the lead item). Note that Tier-2 global vendors like ARCHOS have already restructured in H2 CY2012 because they were hit very hard as best visible by the ARCHOS example:image
This forces these vendors to exploit as fast the Allwinner et. al. phenomenon as only possible, for which ARCHOS was again a lead example. End of foreword.

China ARM chipmakers gaining attention from first-tier vendors [DIGITIMES, March 6, 2013]

With their success in the white-box tablet market, China-based ARM chipmakers Rockchip and Allwinner Technology have started gaining attention from brand vendors worldwide with some first-tier brand vendors even considering adopting the solutions for their entry-level models, according to sources from the upstream supply chain.

Allwinner shipped more than 50 million chips in 2012 with 70% of the volume supplied to markets outside of China. Because its solution’s price is only half that of global first-tier chipmakers, the company’s share in the tablet market is expected to rise further in 2013.

Rockchip has successfully landed orders for HP’s new 7-inch entry-level tablets, while Allwinner is currently still in negotiations with some first-tier brand vendors for orders.

Allwinner is currently offering its dual-core chip at a price of US$5, an upgraded dual-core model, priced at below US$10, and a quad-core chip, priced only half that of Nvidia’s Tegra 3. Since Allwinner’s quad-core solution does not have a large performance gap compared to Tegra 3, orders started growing in the second half of 2012 and are expected to continue staying strong in 2013.

Fiscal year 2012 revenue and focus on profitability [ARCHOS press release, Feb 22, 2013] as translated by Bing, with manual edits

ARCHOS has realized a turnover of 49.8 M€ in the 4th quarter of 2012 against 65.2 M€ in the 4th quarter of 2011. The accumulated revenue over the year 2012 was 154.9 M€, a decrease of 10%compared with 2011.

The United States have been particularly impacted on the period of the strong domination of the iPad. In Europe, according to data from GfK between January 2012 and December 2012 (GfK Panel Market Europe 71), ARCHOS has seen its market share reduced to the benefit of the leaders that recently entered the market segment of less than 400 euros. On the year ARCHOS keeps a share of 8% market volume in this segment, compared to 13% for the period of January to August 2012.

The slowdown seen at the end of the 1st half 2012 continued during the 2nd half. The tablet market has been impacted by the combined effects of the continuation of the iPad 2 after the launch of the new iPad and iPad Mini and the arrival of products ‘subsidised’ by the major players far little influential segment of the material: Amazon with its Kindle Fire (HD or not) declined in several models and Google with its Nexus tablets.

These products are available virtually at cost price and even reinforce a war of price which only intensified during the year, weighing on business volume and profitability of the Group. In these conditions, the gross margin in the 2nd half of the year  was strongly penalized while the level of current operating expenses remained broadly unchanged. The results of the group will also be impacted by the costs related to the restructuring plan launched in November 2012. Finally, the significant reduction observed over the life of the products will require an exceptional amortization of the R & D enabled.

Graphics card makers aggressive about entering entry-level tablet market [DIGITIMES, Feb 20, 2013]

After seeing China-based motherboard maker Onda and graphics card maker Colorful entering the entry-level tablet market, graphics card brand Galaxy Microsystems has recently cooperated with Nvidia to supply an entry-level tablet device with a price below US$149.

Galaxy’s new tablet, the Galapad, features a 7-inch IPS touch panel and a quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 processor, priced at CNY999 (US$160).

Onda has already been operating in the entry-level tablet market for a while, but faced other China-based white-box players’ fierce competition. The company only started achieving good performance recently because of weakening demand for its competitors’ products.

Colorful is mainly selling its tablet devices under the brand name Colorfly and will launch models with sizes including 7-inch, 8-inch, 9.7-inch, 10.1-inch and 13.3-inch. The company currently outsources production to Taiwan-based Chaintech Technology and will mainly push the products to China and Southeast Asia.

China-based Colorful cooperates with Chaintech to launch tablets [Industry News from Advanced MP Technology, Jan 15, 2013]

Colorful Technology and Development, the largest China-based graphics card vendor, has cooperated with Taiwan-based ODM Chaintech Technology to launch tablets in the first quarter of 2013 for sale initially in the China market, with target shipments of 800,000 units for 2013, according to Colorful.

Note that the Allwinner A31 based Colorfly CT972 Q-Vanilla was the first one reported by Chinese media as early as Nov 9, 2012. The official release in the Chinese media happened on Dec 24, 2012. The following Colorfly tablet was available from February:

Among all Colorfly tablets currently only Colorfly CT972 Q.Vanilla (9.7” IPS 1024×768 with 2GB RAM and 16GB NAND), Colorfly CT974 Ivory (9.7” high scores IPS 1024×768 with 2GB RAM and 16GB NAND) and Colorfly CT972 Q.Cosy (9.7” Retina 2048×1536 with 2GB RAM and 32GB NAND) are based on the quad-core A31. From the other 9.7” tablets: two are based on Allwinner A10 (single core) and one on Tegra 2 (dual core). On Rockchip RK3066 (dual core) one 8” tablet, another 10.1 one and  a 13.3” one. All 7” tablets are based on Allwinner A13 (single core).

China-based Colorful cooperates with Chaintech to launch tablets [DIGITIMES, March 7, 2013]

Chaintech began ODM production of motherboards and graphics cards for Colorful in 2012 and has extended production to tablets, Colorful indicated. Colorful has launched 7-, 8-, 9.7-, 10.1- and 13.3-inch tablets for sale under the own-brand Colorfly, the company noted.

Not including iPad series, there were about 60 million tablets sold in the China market in 2012 and the sales volume in 2013 is expected to increase to 90 million units, Colorful indicated. While own-brand vendors and white-box vendors occupy 30% and 70%, respectively, of the sales volume (not including iPad), Colorful gains the upper hand over white-box vendors in retail channel, brand awareness and product quality in the China tablet market, the company pointed out. In addition to the China market, Colorful plans to launch its tablets in Southeast Asia.

Increased white-box tablets expected to benefit panel makers in 2013, say observers [DIGITIMES, Feb 21, 2013]

Panel makers are expected to continue benefiting from the white-box tablet market in 2013 due to an expected increase in sales for the devices in China, according to market observers.

White-box tablets made by China-based tablet vendors are currently priced US$50-60 in order to compete with international tablet vendors, and are increasingly being pushed into segments such as education both in China as well as in other emerging markets, said the observers.

The observers believe that tablets will be even more widely used in consumers’ lives throughout the year, which will increase tablet sales as well as panel sales for the devices.

Taiwan- and China-based tablet panel makers are expected to benefit the most from white-box tablet sales during the time period, and will largely provide WVGA (800 by 480), SVGA (800 by 600), WSVGA (1024 by 600) and TN panels, noted the observers.

Meanwhile, research firm WitsView said that LG Display and Samsung Display are still expected to be the main panel suppliers for high-end tablets in 2013, making up 60-70% of shipments.
